He joined the Royal Navy in 1940, during the Second World War and was involved in the sinking of Germany’s mightiest warship, Bismarck. Later, he commanded a landing ship, into Normandy, during the D-Day invasion. He was awarded the Booker Prize in 1980, Nobel Prize for literature in 1983 and was knighted by the Queen in 1988.
